I was blessed and privileged to have been born and be raised by the most loving and caring parents; anyone could ever hope to have. My dad was an editor and my mom a homemaker, a decision she took after my birth because she wanted to be the best mom and give me her complete attention. Though my parents were hardly rich by any income standards, they always gave me the best they could, even if it meant sacrificing their own joys and goals in life.

So in every way, we were a close knit happy family UNTIL,

My mom started having short episodes of pain in her chest. At first, she dismissed it as a mere heartburn and even hid this painful discomfort that she was suffering from my dad and me so that we wouldn’t worry about her.

And finally one day, as she was working in the kitchen, she started feeling dizzy and had trouble breathing freely. Immediately she was rushed to the hospital and after the initial tests, the doctors revealed that her heart valve was not functioning properly and that she needed to undergo an open-heart surgery.

Being a kid at that time, I didn’t know what that meant, but I realized that the surgery was necessary for my mother to survive and lead a healthy life. My mom started worrying, more about my dad and me than her health. She was scared how life would be for me if something were to go wrong.

Our once happy family slowly became depressed, scared and worried. As a kid, that took a toll on me because I was too young to withstand the pressure and the grim, tense atmosphere at home was just too scary.

My mom starting losing sleep as the day for her surgery grew closer. She was constantly tensed, worried, scared, stressed and to make matters worse was affected by insomnia as well.

Then the day arrived and my mother was successfully operated.

I rejoiced and I was eagerly expecting things to be the same old now that my mother was successfully operated. However I was wrong and what followed was even worse.

During the period of recovery, my mother was still suffering from insomnia and anxiety. The doctors dismissed her problems as post surgical stress, asked her not to be overly anxious and assured that things would just be fine in due course of time.

But as days turned into weeks and weeks into months, my mom’s condition did not improve. She was still suffering from insomnia and that did not help her recovery. Needless to say, she became more stressed and depressed. And whenever she talked about her problems to any family members or friends, they flippantly advised her not to over think and exaggerate her problems. In a way they suggested that she was making up these problems in her mind.

And finally even my dad started wondering if my mom was just making stuff up.

That was the moment when my mom gave up hope, stopped reaching for help and literally kept all her pain to herself. She came to the conclusion that no matter how excruciating the pain was, it was better to suffer in silence as no one would understand what she was going through because they would not believe her.

Until one day, I entered into my mother’s room where she was resting on the bed with her hands on her head and tears rolling down her cheeks. As soon as she realized that I was in the room, she quickly wiped her tears and pretended that everything was normal.

I took my mother’s hands, made her sit on the bed, kneeled in front of her and asked, “What’s wrong mom?”

With her head down trying to wipe off her tears, she replied, “Nothing honey, I am fine”

There was a brief silence before I said, “We were all so happy once, smiling, laughing and full of life and look at us now, each one of us living in our own world, keeping to ourselves and everything is so shallow now. I want you back mom, I want the old you back”

My mother said with tears in her eyes, “She has been gone for a long, long time..”

She continued,” It’s so hurting, son, so painful and depressing when you have a room full of your family members and friends and yet feel lonely. And this is exactly how I have felt for the past 10 years. “

And for me personally that was the most painful moment of my life. Here was my mother, who had dedicated all her life to her family, feeling all alone and empty inside. I felt ashamed of myself because I did not do anything in all these years to make her feel better.

Life has never been the same for him ever since he was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, and it is just heart wrenching to see my dad shout in pain at random moments. Over the years, my mother has also been affected by arthritis.

Personally I had to suffer a lot of agony, pain and mental stress due to my parent’s complicated health issues, but I have grown resilient and become tougher. I have grown to appreciate the fact that unlike my parents, I have been blessed with good health and that I should never take it for granted.

And today we are a much happier family.

Sure my father and mother still have their health issues, but we have found strength in each other by celebrating the good times together and taking steps to incremental improvements for a better, healthier life.
